February 14th isn’t just Valentine’s Day; it’s also National Donor Day! This is a day dedicated to education and awareness around all types of donation – including organ, tissue, bone marrow, platelet, and blood. National Donor Day was started in 1998 by United Auto Workers and Saturn corporation with the help of the U.S Department of Health and Human Services and many other nonprofit organizations. Donor Day was created with the five types of donation listed above being recognized as the main focus of life.

There are more than 100,000 individuals across the world that are waiting to receive a transplant. The reasons behind why someone may need an organ tissue or blood donation can range from simple injuries to even organ failure or disease, but the need for donors is always present.

As health systems and patients observe National Donor Day, Shumsky Therapeutic Pillows is proud to provide postoperative therapeutic pillows that help patients recover comfortably. We offer post-operative pillows that represent a number of surgeries and organs, including kidney, liver, bone, lung, and heart. These therapeutic pillows are designed for increased comfort and pain reduction for patients following surgery and are a perfect way to support both donors and recipients during their hospital stay and throughout recovery.

Our postoperative therapeutic pillows can also aid in patient education by including an anatomical diagram on the pillow. There are a wide variety of diagrams available and, when requested, we can even design a custom diagram for your specific needs. Pillows come with an attached permanent marker for doctors to provide further information to patients about the procedure and hospital staff to give some notes of encouragement.

Since National Donor Day and Valentine’s Day fall on the same day, we encourage you to help spread some love to the recovering patients in your hospital on February 14 and every other day of the year.
